INSIDE

/Foreword

“Everything’s mine but just on loan, nothing for the memory to hold, though mine as long as I look.”

——Simpska

Our cognition of the world is based on the plane images formed by the retina, and the perceptual judgement made by the brain makes us “see” into a world. But we may never know what the real world is like. From this point of view, viewing is actually a subjective act that gives shape and meaning to the real world. As long as we use our eyes, we can never see the real reality.

Through their eyes, the two artists constructed a delicate relationship between “I” and the real world. Scattered light, broken space, arranged bricks, cold corners, these often overlooked time and space are thus fixed on the canvas, and become an important part of these works. They take these ubiquitous scenes and objects out of the objective world, refer to reality but do not copy reality, do not pursue popular patterns and styles, gradually transit from concrete to abstract, find rules in the scattered fragments of life and give them new values, step by step use their own order to unfamiliar the real images. It constructs the “truth” in their eyes.
